I Love Mayonnaise — The Baconnaise Edition

A couple of weeks ago I got the following e-mail:

Hi Ali –

I just did a Google search for “I Love Mayonnaise,” and believe it or not you’re the first result. Great blog by the way!

I own a little food company up in Seattle. Our first product, Bacon Salt, has done very well, but the main reason I’m contacting you is that we just launched something new I thought you’d be interested in. It’s called Baconnaise, and it’s exactly what it sounds like – bacon-flavored mayonnaise. The website is at www.baconnaise.com. It’s great on BLT’s, fries, burgers, sandwiches, dips, salads, fish, chicken and a lot more.

We’re looking for a few good product testers that would be willing to post their reviews of the product on their blogs and give us their feedback.  If you’re interested, please let us know and send us your address, then we’ll send you a free jar of Baconnaise to try out.

Thanks sincerely,
Dave

Bacon-flavored mayonnaise? How could I resist? So I wrote back.

Dave,

Being the number one Google search for "I love mayonnaise" is a point of pride with me. Really.

Thank you for contacting me. I've heard of both Bacon Salt and Baconnaise, from either Buzzfeed, Serious Eats (or both), so I would be honored to try Baconnaise and post about it. I love bacon about as much as I love mayo (and no, I don't weigh 300 pounds) (yet), and my first reaction upon reading the word "baconnaise" was salivation. My second was "that's gotta be so much better than Dijonnaise." And I might have to put that in my blog post about the stuff. Hope you don't mind.

My name is Alison [redacted], and my address is [redacted]

Best (or Hellmann's, if you're me),

Alison

A few days later, I received a package in the mail. It was a Saturday, but I think we waited until the following Monday to crack open the Baconnaise.

Below the fold is my video review of Baconnaise. I crack myself up with the hand-wiping; the jars are a little greasy and I didn't want to get any mayo on my laptop!

And yes, the video is also on YouTube. But I didn't like the way it looked, and thought Dailymotion might have it going on. Meh. It might just be the way iMovie makes stuff.

In Which I Speak My Mind

Usually the "In Which" blog posts are my own videos. This time I'm going to direct you to a video created by David Stephenson of the Lexington Herald-Leader.

I don't appear in the video, so you can all calm down right now. However, my thoughts on the subject at hand became one of the voice-overs. Allan's thoughts were recorded and posted too. An opposing point of view was recorded as well; it's the first voice you hear. (And no, I don't know who it is.)

I haven't written much about what's happening in downtown Lexington here, partly because in the months leading up to the wedding my head fell off several times. (I'm not kidding.) The other reason is that it's a painful subject for me, even though Lexington has been my home for only two and a half years.

Tom Eblen's columns on the subject are measured. Reasonable. My friends at Barefoot & Progressive have not held back, on the other hand.

But today? Joel Pett stole my heart with this editorial cartoon. (A larger version is available if you click on the cartoon itself.)

If you're interested, you can click those links to get a sense of what's going on. If you just want to hear my teary voice, click here. (By the way, we were interviewed just after leaving Thursday Night Live, an outdoor summer concert series...which takes place a block from where the scoops and bulldozers were doing their work. The machines started up just as the concert was ending. Nice, right? And this was the last of the buildings on the block to go. So it was especially poignant.)

I really was looking at myself upside down in the preview screen, because I refused to let anyone else shoot the video.

On A Mission

We were heading for Trader Joe's, but decided to stop in at The Party Store in Newport. The place was closed because their power was out. And then all hell broke loose.

Edit:   I'm going to reiterate a comment I made: The rain wasn't the problem! We were glad to see it after so many weeks of drought.

No, it was the traffic and the blown out stoplights and the other people not knowing how to drive...

I'll See You Your Chocolate, And I'll Raise You A Fish Lady.

Well, the debate on chocolate rages on. Some of you are with me, some of you are against me. There are one or two abstentionists. (I think I may have just made up a word.)

While we all think of Chocolate, our cat FHJones (see Sofa King below) is thinking of fish. This evening, he started groveling while I deveined the shrimp I planned to grill. He continued as I prepared the walleye pike.

After dinner (I had washed my hands several times, mind you) he "loved on me" as they say here in Kentucky. And I filmed him doing it with a tiny digital camcorder that we found at Jo Ann's house.

If you're interested in watching 2 minutes and 13 seconds of kitty love, here's the video.

Le Beaujolais Nouveau, Redux

In which I taste this year's model. And uh, no, it wasn't my first glass.

Last year's video post about the Beaujolais Nouveau. The sound is worse, but I look better.

Edit: Looking back on all my video blogs, I see that this one is MUCH smaller than the others. Time to check back into Dailymotion or YouTube. I just would like to be able to transfer all the videos I made with Audioblog (now Hipcast). Does anybody know if that's possible?

License?

The audio is not in sync with the video.  What's up with that?

Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!

In which I drink wine, and make a goof about when the Beaujolais Nouveau comes out.  It happens on the third Thursday of November, and NOT the third Thursday of every month.  No, I hadn't drunk any wine when I said it.
