Lately my Internet time has been spent on Twitter. In the past couple of weeks, it's mushroomed as a place for local (or hyperlocal, even) happenings, news, and community.
This morning I got locked out of my Twitter account after trying to access it, then changing my password. Twitter wants me to "chillax" (no, really, it's right there on the screen) and I'm trying. I'm really trying. Trouble is, I'm afraid I'll miss something. Ten days ago I missed an amazing community outpouring that occurred during a city council session because I was at work.

Speaking of work, I'm here now. Or there now. Whatever. I'm at my place of unemployment. HA! I'm totally leaving that lapsus, because this really doesn't feel like a JOB. And that? Is awesome.
In any case, I won't get the Twitter DTs, because my workplace now has an account (which I set up, but it wasn't for my own benefit, honest) and I can get my local fix. And hey, if I remain locked out of Twitter at home, maybe I'll write in this blog more often. Maybe I'll write about how Twitter and Facebook help build communities.

Once I was at a party that was starting rather slowly, and people were phoning their friends to know why they weren't here yet. One of the guys burst out laughing, and managed to convey that D*** just told him he was "chillaxing". For the next five minutes nobody was able to phone everybody else because we just couldn't stop laughing. Unfortunately, I'm not sure the word would have quite the same effect coming from Twitter...

I have been on Twitter a lot too, although there is no local community here, that I know of anyway. I just twoogled Rodez and it was a little alarming to see my tweets right up there next to the Wikipedia entry for the town.
When I think of how long it took me to even get ONE unsolicited comment on my blogs, Twitter seems amazingly gratifying.
What can I say? Loulou led me astray, even though she doesn't want to take the fall, when she explained to me that Twitter was about more than knowing that Walt was mowing the lawn and that she was cooking risotto!

I've tried to explain Twitter to my friends who aren't on the service - they just look at me as if I've sprouted a second head. Hey, I even tweeted from the writers reception Saturday night.

I only tweet because you tweet, and I'm not even in Lexington.
