» Beaujolais, The Video from Basic Juice
Basic Juice reader, Ali, current resident of France offers us some video commentary of today's event:Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé! Some poo-poo Nouveau Beau as a gimmick (which it surely is). However, I think it's a fun gimmick. Don't expect [Read More]

» Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé! from Rattling the Kettle
I took my cute-as-can-be family of three to Trader Joes this morning, en route to babys morning nap, to pick up some essentials that we now have room for in the fridge, what with the 14-pound turkey no longer taking up a shelf all by itse... [Read More]

I so wish I could appreciate wine, but alas, to me it merely tastes like someone had left fruit juice out too long.

I know, I know: I'm weird.

But I do like sex, so that has to count for something!

All Hail Nouveau!!! I buy mine on the way home from work This Thursday every year. This year, as always, I will try the Dubeouf. I will also try some of those new-fangled California Nouveaus. Is the Dubeouf grapy like last year, or alcoholic-y like the previous 2 years?

Chris

Funny! I was just listening to a show on NPR yesterday all about it coming out!

bhd

Wow. Julianne drinks wine.

Excellent pour tous les problèmes de plomberie entartrée ou encore de toilettes bouchées. Accessoirement, ça veut dire quoi plonk ?

Here in Franken (Franconia) there is a semi-wine called "Federweisser" in the vintage regions available - it's a must like Cider, but with fermented grapes - you can only transport & keep it in open bottles or jars, because the still running process of fermenting would let a closed bottle explode - it's often sold in big 5 or 10 liter water containers - if you buy it, it has in most cases about 4 % alcohol, but if you keep it for some days on a warm place the alcohol process continues & it can get up to 12 % alcohol in the end - it tastes sweet & tickling (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federweisser)

Heimo - I want to try some of that!

Third Thirstday of evry month would be good.

Looks like wine, smells like wine, tatses like s... (just watching your reaction - lol)

Interestingly, that video was an intimate, sweet moment. I think somebody in Kentucky will watch that a lot.

"Les vins nouveaux" were a tradition long before the world wide maketing operation. It was a kind of fest after the vendanges. But the wine was not supposed to be good. It was usually acid and not mature. You could only guess if it will be good or not.
I prefer "vin primeur" which is the same wine a few months later.
French wine industry is in a very bad position today. Thanks for your help, Ali...

Linda

Vin primeur is the same wine a few months later? I always thought, or was told, that Beaujolais Nouveau was "bad" a few months later...not fit to drink past late January. Indeed I had tried one once in February that tasted like it was well on its way to vinegar. If there is a specific winery you recommend, I'd love to give that another shot.

LittleMike

I won't drink it past the new year.

Heimo

@ Edieraye -Federweisser is only available from September to October & only in the vine regions of South Germany, Switzerland, Austria & South Tyrol & it's hard to transport at long distances, so just come over here in the right time -
@ Alison - your face after the first sip of 'Beaujolais Nouveau' doesn't look that convincing - it looks like you tasted vinegar - so I doubt the positive effect on commercials for 'wine nouveau' - but on the other hand it may has the 'Charly Chaplin' effect in 'King of New York' when he spits that drink, he's doing commercials for, out.. - we all want to try it, just to get that expression on our faces..

This 'Beaujolais Nouveau' thing really took off in the mid 80s. I remember people lining up for it on opening day and it spiked my curiosity so I thought I'd give it a go only to find that most of it was pure crap. The odd winery did produce the occasional tasty bit with nice fruity flavours and some actual tannins but overall it was nothing but hype perpetrated by the French to dump cheaply made wine unto the trendy public. It's popularity has since waned. One that I would recommend though is JEANJEAN SYRAH PRIMEUR 2005.

On another note....my God Dimples, you are cute! No wonder Allan crosses the pond so often.
