This weekend I fobbed the children off on their father, and I came to my friend Anne's house for the weekend. Her friend Ema is here as well. You can read about my first encounter with Ema here. Well, at the last minute Anne and her husband received an invitation to a lunchtime party today. Anne said I could come here anyway; Ema was going to watch the kids and could I tweak her business website?
Yes.
I got here at 8:00 last evening, and was promptly served a drink. Fast forward to today. It's an absolutely gorgeous afternoon, and instead of tweaking any website, I've been drinking tea out in the warm October sunshine. Ema and I had a good chat about lots of things, and she plucked my eyebrows again (Oh my GOD, I did something GIRLY!) and Anne's children went about their business.
A little bit ago, I came into Anne's office to get started on the work I'd promised her. Her 8-year old son followed me in here, and said "What are you doing on the computer?"
"Something for your mom."
"That's a new computer, you know."
"Yes, I know, and your mom said I could do whatever I want with it."
(Meanwhile, he turned on the laptop next to me and got ready to play a game).
He made another snide comment, and I said "Hey, just be quiet. I know a whole lot more about computers than you do. Can't you play that game somewhere else?"
"No."
So here I sit. My Dreamweaver software is not working on this computer for some reason, and I've got a sneaky kid sitting next to me, playing Atlantis.
I like my own kids, but a lot of times I don't like other people's kids. And I know just how blessed I am to have the children I have. But I'm glad they're not with me right now.
UPDATE: P. stopped playing the game and wandered off to find Ema. A few seconds later I heard her raise her voice at him: "Would you stop being such a cheeky little sod!" It made me laugh. It's not just me.
